Your ChexSystems Record
Want to see your record? Want to see what they have on file about you and exactly what is being said? You have the right to this information under the the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act(FACTA) which is an addition to the Fair Credit Reporting Act(FCRA), you can get a free copy of your report just for the asking. Really – and you can see it for free once every twelve months – just for the asking. It is the law.
The official way to get a copy of your record or report is to go tho this link (free report copy). The way this works is that you go their official website linked and you can find out what information that they have on file about you. It is good to know that this information is there for your review – this protects you from false reports and allows you to investigate what is going on.
You are eligible for the report if you have been denied a bank account and they were the reason given for the denial. When you get your report it will be useful in figuring out exactly what it is they are claiming you have done. Sometimes you already know and other times you do not know – but at least this gives you a way to check up on the information. When you go to the website linked above you will be asked a lot of specific questions and you will be asked to verify your identity. The reason for all of this is to protect you from identity theft or for others getting your information. Some of the conditions they hold you to are that you can only order your own report not the report for others. You also have to verify under penalty of federal law that you understand that if you are getting the report for another person not yourself – that you are violating federal law. It is really crazy because then they tell you that not only is it against the law but that getting another persons information is punishable by finer and/or prison. Then they tell you they are tracking you if you request data. Pretty scary stuff but I would not worry about it all as long as you are legit and only seeking a report on yourself. Complete the site and then you will be able to review your personal record. I am not certain if you see it online or if they mail it to you – but I know that this is the way to view it. If you feel you want to contact them personally then here is there contact information: There mailing address is ChexSystems, Inc., Consumer Relations, 7805 Hudson Road, Ste 100,Woodbury, MN 55125. There fax telephone number is 602-659-2197 and there standard line is 800-428-9623. They are under constant scrutiny by consumer organizations and they are very careful in their correspondence. Follow the procedures and you will be fine but remember – they are an information collecting agency so if you do not want them to know how to get ahold of you then do not request your report. I have heard – but cannot verify – that oftentimes if you owe money to a bank and you are reported to them, that the bank uses them as their collection agency – so if you order a report guess what – now they know how to contact you! Ever wonder who has access to your file? Well here is the list of eligible parties who can submit a request: If you give permission then a business transaction initiated by the consumer can release their own file. If chexsystems gets a court order or federal grand jury request they can give up your information. If you give permission a perspective employer may request your record. Oftentimes a government regulated professional license will include a chexsystems report as a part of your approval. On your record you will find a specific report for you. Sometimes it is a chex systems report for NSF activity and other times it is for depositing un-collectible items or at times the report will say money owed or no money owed either way the report is a very careful wording of what violation they are accusing you of – the rest is simple to read information and all can be found on their website – once you see your report though do not despair – just come back here and get your self started with a non chex bank.
